SARAH GODFREY - Artists Statement

Sarah has always had a very spontneous and intuitive approach when making her artwork. She has two disitinct styles .

As Sarah trained as an Illustrator it is not surprising this is her first love , she creates highly sophisticated, over the top images, purely imaginative and fantasical. She uses as many different methods of mark making within one image as she can lay her hands on, obsessively layering and relayering. Images may be inspired by memories, stories, etc always added to by Sarahs own unique way of seeing, she wishes to entice and encourage the viewer to look deeper into the images and get involved.

Sarah is inspired by primitive arts, niave art, outsider and childrens art. With folk art and fairgrounds, tapestries, pottery, grand old houses, old toys which she loves to draw and incorporate into her illustrations at a later stage.

Over the last four years Sarah has been researching the non toxic intaglio-type printmaking technique supported by Arts Council England. This testing of the process required Sarah to work in a very different manner. It was not practical to work on a detailed images, when the process may go wrong, Sarah now had to focus on the process rather than the imagery .As a result she has produced a recent series of exploratory prints which are purely expressionistic, impulsive and passionate. Each print has layers of colours and marks, indulgencies in colour, shape and form.
